What is a monitor technician?

A monitor technician observes the heartbeats and electrocardiograms (EKG) of patients in intensive care units or ICUs. They typically work in hospitals and sit at computers outside of patients’ rooms to perform their job.

It can be confusing what a "monitor technician" is because hospitals will also use the job titles telemetry technician, cardiac monitor technician, 12-lead EKG tech and more. The fact that nurses and nurse assistants are adding this becoming certified adds even more titles to the mix.

We provide the skills you need to work in any of these roles and break the learning into two separate courses, titled arrhythmia interpretation and 12-lead ECG.

Testimonials

In general, if you will be placing the leads on the patients, or using a 12-lead ECG, you will be learning those skills in the second course.

Arrhythmia interpretation

  • Anatomy and physiology of the heart
  • What is the ECG?
  • Rhythms / sinus node
  • Rhythms / atria

  • Junctional arrhythmias / heart blocks

12-Lead ECG

  • Introduction to ECG
  • Configuring the axis
  • Lead placement

Yes, the learning materials and exam are all online, although you can print it out. This format works very well for this course because the main skill you are learning is to recognize patterns on rhythm. You will have plenty of access to rhythms in this course, versus a classroom where you must learn at the same speed as everyone else. There are different models of ECG machines, however the basic configuration is same and you will learn this in our course.

Yes, you can pay for the first module separately and then pay for and complete the second one at a later time. This effectively spreads your payment into two installments with payment on your own schedule. In this scenario, the total cost is $400 for the first module and $370 for the second module. You receive the discounted price on the second module by logging in and then purchasing while logged in to receive the returning customer discount.
